The PlayStation 5 offers an incredibly convenient feature known as Rest Mode, which allows the console to download updates, charge controllers, and suspend gameplay in a low-power state. However, some players prefer to disable this setting entirely due to unexpected power disruptions or a personal preference for full system shutdowns. Managing your console power states effectively ensures that your hardware runs optimally and matches your daily gaming habits perfectly.

Navigating to the Power Saving Settings

To begin customizing your console power options, you need to access the main dashboard. Start by selecting the gear icon located in the upper right corner of the home screen to open the Settings menu. From there, scroll down through the available system categories until you find the System submenu.

Inside the System settings, look for the Power Saving option listed on the left side of the screen. Selecting this will open up a new column of choices dedicated entirely to how your machine manages its electrical consumption. This menu provides full control over how your console behaves when left idle during your sessions.

Disabling Automatic Rest Mode Features

Once inside the Power Saving menu, select the option labeled Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode. You will be given two distinct configuration paths, one for when media is playing and another for when you are actively gaming. To prevent the console from entering its standby state automatically, you must adjust both options manually.

Click on each scenario individually and scroll through the time increments until you reach the bottom of the list. Select the Don't Put into Rest Mode setting for both active gaming and media playback environments. This simple adjustment ensures your console remains fully powered on until you explicitly decide to turn it off.

Adjusting Features Available in Rest Mode

Even if you prevent the console from entering standby automatically, it can still access low-power states via the power menu unless you modify background permissions. Navigate back to the Power Saving tab and select Features Available in Rest Mode to view what systems stay active. Disabling these options will further minimize any unintended background operations when the machine is asleep.

Turn off the toggles for Supply Power to USB Ports and Stay Connected to the Internet. By stripping these background capabilities, you effectively reduce the functionality of the standby state to a bare minimum. This ensures your console draws zero unnecessary network data or electrical power when you choose to wind down your day.

Shutting Down Your Console Completely

With your automatic configurations saved, your PlayStation 5 will no longer slip into a low-power state on its own. When you are finished with a gaming session, press the PlayStation button on your DualSense controller to bring up the control center. Navigate to the Power icon located on the far right of the pop-up menu.

Select Turn Off PS5 instead of the standby alternative to ensure a complete and safe system shutdown. The console indicator lights will blink and eventually turn off entirely, confirming the machine is resting safely without drawing residual power. Following this routine protects your data and gives your hardware a fresh start every single time you play.
