Spirit Ashes are essential allies in Elden Ring, offering vital assistance during tough combat encounters across the Lands Between. However, many players encounter frustrating situations where the option to summon spirit ashes is completely grayed out or unavailable. Understanding why this mechanic becomes locked is the first step toward troubleshooting summoning issues effectively.

Missing Key Items and Requisites

Before you can call forth any spirit ashes, your character must own the Spirit Calling Bell item. Renna the Witch typically gifts this item early in the game at the Church of Elleh, but players can also purchase it from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold. Without this specific key item in your inventory, Spirit Ashes remain completely unusable regardless of location.

Additionally, each spirit ash invocation requires a specific amount of Focus Points or Health Points to cast. If your stats do not meet the FP or HP cost of a high-tier summon, your character will be unable to call them into battle. Checking your status bar ensures you possess sufficient resources to invoke your chosen spirit companion.

Zone Restrictions and The Gravestone Symbol

Summoning spirits is not permitted freely everywhere throughout the game world. Elden Ring restricts Spirit Ashes to designated areas, usually indicated by a blue glowing gravestone icon on the left side of your screen. These zones typically encompass boss arenas, enemy encampments, and major points of interest.

If you wander outside the boundary of a designated summoning area, active spirits will automatically disappear and new ones cannot be summoned. Always verify that the small gravestone icon is visible on your UI before attempting to use Spirit Ashes. Once a local boss is defeated, the summoning zone in that specific area often deactivates permanently.

Multiplayer Locks and Furlcalling Remedy Conflicts

Engaging in multiplayer activities imposes strict limitations on calling spirit companions. If you have summoned co-op partners or invaded another player's world, Spirit Ashes are automatically disabled for the duration of the session. The game design prevents combining human cooperators with spirit summons in the same encounter.

Even using a Furlcalling Finger Remedy to search for co-op signs will lock out spirit summons. To resolve this issue, simply open your inventory and nullify the active Furlcalling Finger Remedy effect. Once multiplayer mode is deactivated, your Spirit Ashes will function normally as long as you are within a valid zone.

Quick Fixes for Summoning Issues

If you meet all prerequisites but still face summoning problems, double-check your equipped quick slots and pouch items. Ensuring your desired Spirit Ash is properly assigned makes activation seamless during intense fights. If a spirit dies in combat, you cannot summon it again during that same battle without resetting at a Site of Grace.

Resting at a nearby checkpoint restores your FP and resets all active world states, which often resolves temporary glitches. Upgrading your Spirit Ashes with Roderika at the Roundtable Hold also improves their performance once summoned. Taking these simple diagnostic steps ensures your spirit companions are always ready to assist you in battle.
